ChaetoGro – FAQ

What is ChaetoGro?
ChaetoGro is a multi-nutrient supplement designed to promote the growth and health of Chaetomorpha (chaeto) macroalgae in marine aquariums and refugiums.

What does ChaetoGro do?
It provides essential nutrients required for chaeto growth, helping improve macroalgae health, growth rate, and nutrient export capacity in refugium systems.

What nutrients does ChaetoGro provide?
ChaetoGro supplies 13 essential elements, including iron, cobalt, and molybdenum, which are critical for macroalgae growth and coloration.

Is ChaetoGro safe for fish, corals, and invertebrates?
Yes. When used as directed, it is safe for all marine aquarium inhabitants, including shrimp and invertebrates.

Does ChaetoGro contain nitrate or phosphate?
No. It is phosphate- and nitrate-free, making it safe for use in reef systems focused on nutrient control.

When should I use ChaetoGro?

  • When chaeto growth is slow or stalled
  • In refugium-based nutrient export systems
  • In ultra-low nutrient systems (ULNS)
  • When macroalgae appears pale or unhealthy

Why would chaeto stop growing without supplementation?
In many reef systems—especially ULNS—key nutrients (like iron and trace elements) become depleted, limiting macroalgae growth even when nitrate and phosphate are present.

How does ChaetoGro help reduce nitrate and phosphate?
ChaetoGro does not directly remove nutrients. Instead, it enhances chaeto growth, which in turn absorbs nitrate and phosphate as it grows, improving natural nutrient export.

How do I dose ChaetoGro?

  • Shake well before use
  • Dose directly into a high-flow area or refugium
  • Follow label instructions and adjust based on macroalgae growth

How often should I dose ChaetoGro?

  • Typically dosed several times per week
  • Adjust based on chaeto growth rate and system demand

Do I need to maintain nitrate and phosphate levels when using ChaetoGro?
Yes. Chaeto requires some nutrients to grow effectively.

  • Recommended minimums: ~0.01 ppm phosphate and ~3–5 ppm nitrate

Can I overdose ChaetoGro?
Excess dosing is unnecessary and should be avoided. Overdosing may lead to imbalances or unwanted algae growth.

Can ChaetoGro be used without a refugium?
It is specifically designed for systems with macroalgae (like chaeto). It is not needed if no macroalgae is present.

Can I use ChaetoGro with other products?
Yes. It is often used alongside:

  • MicroBacter7
  • Carbon sources (like Reef BioFuel)

These help support overall nutrient processing and system balance.

What problems does ChaetoGro help solve?

  • Slow or stalled chaeto growth
  • Ineffective refugium nutrient export
  • Pale or weak macroalgae
  • ULNS systems lacking key nutrients
